Chestnut Hills
Introduction
At Glenaden Homes, we recently completed a full home renovation in Chesnut Hills, the Edenbridge/Humber Valley neighborhood, for a professional couple with three active boys under the age of 12. They found a tear-down property in their preferred area and wanted to build a spacious new home with a pool, and a sports court in the basement. Referred to us by their architect, PH D Design, they sought our expertise for a custom addition and renovation project.
Approach
To meet our client’s needs, we took a collaborative and strategic approach. We started by working with them to establish a comprehensive budget for their new build. Throughout the project, we sourced and priced out various options for interior and exterior finishes that would still provide the clients with the wow factor but ensured we didn’t have a run-away budget.
Implementation
The project execution involved several critical steps:
Initial Demolition and Access Creation: We began by partially demolishing the existing house to facilitate the installation of the pool. To ensure the pool company had access, we constructed a temporary driveway through the demolished area. This was essential since there wouldn’t have been enough access to the backyard once the new house was built.
Construction: After the pool installation, we resumed construction and we maintained close coordination with the architect throughout to ensure the details of the home were well executed. We had frequent site meetings with the architect and clients, particularly during the framing of the complex cathedral ceilings. This ensured that all architectural elements met the clients' specifications and aesthetic desires.
Custom Elements and Fun Features: The homeowners wanted to incorporate some fun custom elements into their home. We built a sports court in the basement for the boys and added a unique feature—a 3rd base plate from the Toronto Blue Jays under glass at the entrance to the sports area. We also incorporated a secret door in the boys' bathroom that leads to unfinished attic space.
Result
The renovation project was a success, resulting in a beautifully finished home that thrilled our clients. Key outcomes include:
Enhanced Living Space: The new home provided ample room for the family, including a sports court and a pool, which were invaluable during the COVID-19 pandemic as they had sufficient space for work, schooling, and recreation.
Unique Features: The sports court and the Toronto Blue Jays' 3rd base plate added unique, personalized elements that the family enjoys.
Client Satisfaction: The clients expressed immense satisfaction with the project. One client remarked, "We are thrilled with our new home. The sports court and pool have been fantastic for our boys, especially during the pandemic. We just love our home in every way."
This project not only met but exceeded the family's needs, providing a functional and enjoyable living space that catered to their lifestyle and personal interests.
